Philippines Chef de Mission Says PH Gets TireD of Being at the Bottom in SEA Games
In a recent statement issued by the Philippines’ Chef de Mission regarding the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, Cynthia Carrion, she claimed that this year’s Philippine delegation is really eager to step up in the medal rankings.
Carreon even linked the gross domestic products of the country’s Southeast Asian neighbors to its sporting success, claiming that the country should likewise be performing well in the sporting platform.
Meanwhile, based on the International Monetary Fund, Philippines comes fourth place in the Southeast Asian region when it comes to GDP per capita at $2,951.07 back in 2016.
However, when it comes to sports, Philippines only comes sixth place in the 2015 SEA Games, just behind Singapore, Vietnam , Malaysia and Indonesia.
“We’re up there with Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand in terms of GDP.. So we can do the same in sports, and we should really do that.”
Carreon further claimed that their target for a gold medal haul is 50, apparently a number that is more than double that of the 29 the country won in Singapore.
“I say around 50, but when I talked to all the athletes they promised me 63 but I just want to say 50.. I feel we’re going to reach the target.”
